Miriam Awyan
Khemitian Massage Therapist & Medical Intuitive

EgyptInitiations-MiriamAywan-Sm.jpg (9152 bytes)
For as long as she can remember, Miriam has been able to "feel" the illness of the people that she comes in contact with. Even as a very young child, her hands were drawn to the source of the pain on the body, with a desire, and uncanny ability to alleviate it. Driven by this desire to heal the suffering of others, she studied many different massage techniques. Although she brings all this knowledge into her practice, she feels that much of what she does is channeled from an ancient Egyptian, or Khemitian source. As her hands "feel" and manipulate the physical and energetic body, Miriam is intuitively given a deeper knowledge of the emotional origin or blocks that generated the individual's "dis-ease". Her massage and healing sessions are sought after by people coming to her from all over the world.

During the Sacred Initiatory Journey Part 2, while we're in Giza, you can experience an optional Khemitian Massage with Miriam. Enjoy positive transformation! (Price: $60 per hour.) Please email Patricia Awyan or Andrea Mikana-Pinkham and info@EgyptInitiations.com to schedule your session.

Afterwards we'll enjoy a delicious lunch on your own with the group at a local restaurant.

Then we're invited to visit the Awyan home and Gallery. First, we'll learn a few easy and useful Arabic words and phrases from language teacher Raba Awyan.

Dinner on your own. Overnight Giza.

Day 2. Monday, November 1. To Aswan; Elephantine Island, Temple of Khnum & Museums (B)
Egypt-AbuSimbel.jpg (7472 bytes)Morning OPTIONAL Tour: Abu Simbel accompanied by our Egyptologist Hassam Gedawy.  Located near the southern border of Egypt with Sudan, the Great Temple is dedicated to Ramesses II and Queen Nefertari, the love of his life. The temple's facade is dominated by four enormous seated statues of the Pharaoh, each over 67 feet high. The temples were shifted to higher ground in the 1960s as the waters of Lake Nasser began to rise following completion of the Aswan High Dam. Return to Aswan and transfer to the hotel.

OR, we check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport for our short flight to Aswan, one of the world's most beautiful resort towns, noted for its peace and quiet. Located on the First Cataract of the Nile and gateway to Nubia, with its colorful bazaar, laid-back atmosphere, warm and welcoming people and a lovely promenade along the Nile, Aswan is a favorite city in Egypt for many visitors. Arrive and transfer to our luxurious spa hotel located in the Nile on Elephantine Island, named for the Greek word meaning 'elephant'. The more common name for the city by ancient Egyptians was Sehel, which also meant 'elephant'. The name describes the city's function as a gate to the South, since elephants were basically brought from the south towards Nubia. Time to rest and relax. Lunch on your own.

Khnum.jpg (7578 bytes)In the afternoon,  we explore the ancient Temple of Khnum, the main cult center of the ram-headed creatorEgypt-Aswan-TempleOfKhnum.jpg (7908 bytes) god. Khnum was the Neter of fertility, water and the Great Potter who created children and their ka at their conception. The ka is the double that lingered on in the tomb inhabiting the body or even statues of the deceased, but was also independent of the body and could move, eat and drink at will.) Khnum is believed by some experts to have been a pre-dynastic Neter. He was the guardian of the source of the Nile, and was originally a Nile god who became a helper of Hapi, the present-day Neter associated with the Nile. Then his role changed from the river god to the one who made sure that the right amount of silt was released into the water during the Nile's annual inundation. He worked with the silt, the soil that the ancient potters used, and thus became the great potter who not only molded men and women, but who molded the Neters themselves, and even the world. We'll take time for individual meditation. Open your heart to receive an Empowerment Initiation from Khnum.Egypt-Aswan-Elephantine-Shrine.jpg (6374 bytes)

Afterwards we'll see a huge granite shrine, an amazing smoking gun that shows that the ancient Khemitians used advanced machining techniques!  We can also surmise what natural catastrophe in the distant past could have knocked this huge box over on its side. Time permitting, we'll also visit both the old and new museums, which are full of many interesting artifacts, including a mummified ram of Khnum.

Return to the hotel. Take advantage of the spa facilities - get a massage or some other relaxing therapy.
Dinner on your own.
Overnight Aswan.

Day 3. Tuesday, November 2. Aswan: Temple of Isis, Embark Cruise Ship; Felucca Ride (B/L/D)
After an early breakfast we depart to the Island of Agilkia, the small island where the temples that were on the Island of Philae were moved to when the Aswan High Dam was completed in 1970. The name Philae comes from the ancient Egyptian word Pilak, meaning “the remote place.” This southernmost site in Egypt was the last outpost of the 4,000 year-old ancient Egyptian spiritual tradition that venerated Isis, the Neter of Healing and Magic, wife/sister of Osiris, and mother of Horus.

Egypt-Isis-Ani.gif (5790 bytes)Isis may be the oldest deity in Egypt, and certainly the oldest to survive in much the same form as in the ancient times. She may also be the most important, as She was worshipped almost universally by all Egyptians. As the major Goddess of the Egyptian pantheon, with many of the same attributes of other Mother Goddesses found all over the world, She was revered as the Great Protector, prayed to for guidance, and beseeched for peace in the world. Her Egyptian name was Auset, which meant "female of throne", i.e. Queen of the Throne. In the matriarchal and matrilineal Khemetian culture, the woman was the power behind the throne. The mother or sister chose the male who ruled. Thus the throne that is shown carved on Isis' head in hieroglyphs in the temples.

EgyptInitiations-AndreaMikanaPinkham5-Sm.jpg (4224 bytes)During the Greco-Roman period, this sacred island was the main cult center of Isis. Her worship lasted here until the 6th century CE, when it was outlawed by the Emperor Justinian. Though it died out here, Her influence spread to Greece and Rome and on throughout Europe. Some researchers believe that the Black Madonnas  were representations of Isis and Her son Horus.

We enter the Temple of Isis, where we'll welcome Her into Her shrine in the Holy of Holies. As Her priestesses and priests did in ancient times, we'll call in Her powerful magic! Then as the sun comes up, we'll offer our heartfelt requests for healing and transformation. She will bestow upon us a sacred Initiation into Her Divine Feminine Mysteries, supporting you to develop your healing powers for any new projects that you're bringing into manifestation, as well as to connect with more Unconditional Love within yourself. You will be forever connected with Her!

Afterwards we return to Aswan and embark the cruise ship. Take some time to get settled into your cabin before lunch on the deck. After lunch you can explore a bit of Aswan on your own: walk along the promenade next to the Nile, or just relax onboard.

Egypt-Aswan-NubianVillage.jpg (9468 bytes)Afternoon OPTIONAL Tours: This afternoon you have the opportunity to explore Awan's ancient Nubian culture with our Egyptologist Hassam Gedawy. The local Nubian Museum houses an excellent collection of artefacts, all very well displayed. You can also visit a Nubian Home, where you'll enjoy the warm hospitality of the kind and graciousEgypt-Aswan-FeluccaRide.jpg (9248 bytes) people, as well as learn about some of the unique aspects of their culture, which has been in this area since antiquity. The women offer henna tattoos. As well you can buy a momento of your visit, all handcrafted by the family: woven baskets, handmade beaded necklaces, bracelets and earrings and much more.

Just before sunset we'll board a felucca, a Nubian sailboat, to enjoy a peaceful and serene sail on the Nile. Bring your camera! Return to the cruise ship. Dinner onboard. Overnight Cruise Ship.

Day 4. Wednesday, November 3. Aswan Market; Kom Ombo; to Edfu (B/L/D)
Egypt-Aswan-SpiceMarket.jpg (7164 bytes)In the morning Andrea and Vivian will accompany the group to the local souk, where you will be able to buy scarves, galabayahs, belly dance costumes and more from Vivian's friend who is the local wholesaler! We'll also stop in at the spice market, where you can buy just about any kind of spice you can think of. They'll be expertly packaged so that you can easily take them home with you to enjoy in your cooking.

We return to the cruise ship for lunch on board as we depart Aswan for our sail down the Nile on our way to Luxor.Egypt-KomOmbo-SobekAndHoaeris.jpg (10477 bytes)

During the afternoon we'll meet with Featured Speaker Mark Amaru Pinkham for a presentation: The Alchemical Mysteries of Sobek, the Egyptian Dragon. During the presentation Mark will teach an alchemical practice that can be used to summon and commune with Sobekh at his sacred temple at our next destination of Kom Ombo.

Egypt-KomOmbo.jpg (9487 bytes)In the late afternoon we round a bend in the Nile and behold the Temple of Kom Ombo, a magnificent edifice of energy-filled ruins overlooking the river. Our visit will take us through this famous dual temple dedicated to the Neters Sobek (right) and Haoeris, (Horus the Elder), an early form of Horus. You will have meditation time to receive your initiation to balance the Light & Dark within yourself. And we'll use the alchemical practice taught by Mark Amaru earlier this afternoon. Call upon Sobek to help you to overcome an fears that are keeping your from uniting with the energies of Horus, symbol of your Higher Self.

We return to the cruise ship for dinner on board and sail to Edfu, where we arrive late evening.
Overnight Cruise Ship.Egypt-Edfu-Horus.jpg (4890 bytes)

Day 5. Thursday, November 4. Edfu Temple - Private Entrance; to Luxor (B/L/D)
Egypt-Edfu-HolyOfHolies.jpg (4616 bytes)After an early breakfast we depart for our visit to Edfu Temple, dedicated to the Neter Horus, son of Isis and Osiris, the falcon-headed Neter who is the symbol of the Higher Self. The temple complex is one of the finest examples of Ptolemaic art in Egypt and perhaps one of the best preserved of the entire ancient world. We explore the various temples with our Egyptologist, viewing the richly decorated important scenes related to the divinities associated with the cult of Horus: Osiris, Isis, Sokar, and Khonsu. We have time for meditation so that you can call in the energies of Horus to help you strengthen your connection with your Higher Self. (Note the Orbs in this photo taken by Andrea in the Holy of Holies! The Light Beings are definitely there!)

Return to cruise ship. Lunch on board. Free time in the afternoon as we continue down the Egypt-Nile-Ani.gif (9256 bytes), having the rest of the day to relax, enjoy this beautiful ship, watch the Nile scenery and the local people.

At some point during the afternoon, we'll meet onboard with our Featured Speakers from the KSAM, Yousef Awyan, Patricia Awyan and Andrea Mikana-Pinkham, for various discussion groups.

At some point we go through the Esna locks. While we await our turn to pass through the locks, we will be visited by some of the local vendors,Egypt-NileCruise-EsnaLocks.jpg (6685 bytes) who will pull up alongside the ship and toss galabayahs, tablecloths, tapestries, scarves, and all kinds of goodies up to us, in hopes of making a sale. It's a fun time of surprises and supporting the local economy while getting some of the best shopping bargains of the trip. Dinner on board. We arrive Luxor in the late evening.

Overnight Cruise Ship.

Day 6. Friday, November 5. Luxor: Sekhmet Chapel, Karnak Temple, Temple of Luxor (B/L/D)
Egypt-Karnak-AndreaSekhmet.jpg (5405 bytes)After our early buffet breakfast on board, we depart to Karnak Temple to visit the incomparable Sekhmet Chapel, located in the Temple of Ptah. Sekhmet is one of the oldest of the Neters. Her name means "Mighty One" or "Powerful One" and is derived from the Egyptian word 'Sekhem', which means "power" or "might". She was the patroness of physicians, surgeons and healers. Because of Her power, She is sometimes portrayed in a negative way by traditional Egyptology. They often overlook Her qualities as Healer, Mother and Protector. Sekhmet's black granite statues show Her standing with a scepter in the shape of the papyrus, heraldic plant of  Lower Egypt. As with the Goddess Isis, Sekhmet seems to have recently been reinvented, and to some people She has become the symbol of the modern-day empowered woman. She is still approached as a healer, bringer of justice and as a guardian or protector, but the emphasis has shifted so that She has transformed from what was almost a force of chaos into an icon of immanent female power.

Andrea will facilitate a Sacred Ceremony to assist you to connect with Sekhmet and Her powerfully protective Unconditional Love of the Mother, as well as the the transformative energy that destroys the ego and brings you into alignment with your Higher Self. Through meditation and chanting, we will call Her timeless energies to us for a great blessing. She will enfold you in Her loving arms and bless you with an initiation that will gift you with increased empowerment of the Divine Feminine in your Being.

Afterwards, we explore the vast Temple of Karnak, the largest columned temple in the world.. Once connected to Luxor Temple, two milesEgypt-Karnak-HolyOfHolies.jpg (5694 bytes) away, by a long avenue of Sphinxes (which are still partially intact), Karnak is dedicated to the Neter  Amun-Ra, the hidden Power of Creation, and his feminine counterpart, the Neter Mut. One of ancient Egypt's most complex theologies was the worship surrounding Amun. He represented absolute holiness, and in this regard he was different then any other Egyptian deity. He was so holy that He remained independent of the created universe. He was associated with the air as an invisible force, which facilitated His growth as a supreme deity. As the Egyptian creator deity par excellence, Amun was self-created and was thus hidden from humanity. However, the addition of "Ra" to His name revealed Him. Ra was the common Egyptian term for the sun, thus making Him visible. Hence, Amun-Ra combined within Himself the two opposites of divinity, the hidden and the revealed. We'll explore the Temple of Amun, including the Holy of Holies.

Egypt-Karnak-FestivalHallTuthmosisIII.jpg (8278 bytes)We then visit the Festival Hall of Tuthmosis III, where some Rosacrucians believe their spiritual tradition originated. Some researchers indicate that  here Tuthmosis III reorganized the ancient Mystery Schools of Thoth and founded the Royal School of the Master Craftsmen, which came to be known as the Great White Brotherhood. Note the photo at right containing from left to right: the feathers of Maat, the Neter of Balance and Justice, the caliphers for measuring, and the Neter Ptah, the Divine Architect. Take a few quiet moments to meditate and invite in the energies of this ancient Order that still exists on the higher planes today, and receive any messages that might be bestowed upon you. Be open! It was here that Andrea received the divine inspiration that it was time to form the Khemitian School of Ancient Mysticism with the Awyan family. Your being here today is an expression of that Higher Guidance.

We return to the cruise ship for lunch on board. Then we're off to visit Vivian and Andrea's friends at Radwan, where you will be able to find the perfect sacred amulet of your favorite Neter. Will it be Isis? Hathor? Sekhmet? Horus? Osiris? Who is calling you? You'll also be able to order a galabayah measured to fit you perfectly, as well as 100% Egyptian cotton t-shirts with you name in hieroglyphics. A great place to shop for gifts for family and friends too!

Return to the hotel. You also have time to visit the Luxor Museum on your own, a beautiful newer museum which has many recently found antiquities and statues in its excellent collection.

Egypt-LuxorTempleByNight2.jpg (8000 bytes)Egypt-LuxorTempleByNight.jpg (11948 bytes)Our evening visit under the stars to magnificent Luxor Temple is a real treat! In the cool of the evening we walk the well-worn pathways of this amazing structure and connect with its ancient energies. In the Holy of Holies Andrea will facilitate a meditation to support you to connect more fully with your Third Eye intuitive energies, to bring that which is usually hidden from your conscious self into the Light, for your continued spiritual evolution. During our visits here with groups in the past many people have captured orbs in their photos, such as the one at the right. We'll explore this exciting light phenomenon and what it means in this time in the evolution of consciousness.

Return to the cruise ship for dinner on board. Overnight Cruise Ship.

Day 7. Saturday, November 6. Abydos (B/L)Egypt-Djed-Ani.gif (24324 bytes)
Egypt-Abydos.jpg (7745 bytes)After breakfast we disembark from the cruise ship and depart by motor coach on our full day journey to Abydos, cradle of the oldest dynasties. On the way we go through Nag Hammadi where the Nag Hammadi Scrolls or the Gnostic Gospels as they're known today, hidden in an earthenware jar for 1,600 years, were accidentally unearthed by a local shephard boy in 1945. This immensely important discovery is a collection of thirteen ancient codices containing over fifty texts, and includes a large number of primary Gnostic scriptures, such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, The Gospel of Mary, and the Gospel of Truth.

We arrive later morning at Abydos, the
holy city dedicated to Osiris, Neter of Renewal and Wholeness, situated on the western bank of the Nile. Abydos was the burial place for the first kings of a unified Egypt, and also contains remains from the Predynastic period. Ancient Egyptians were required to make a pilgrimage here at least once in their lifetimes; today we make ours! Egypt-Abydos2.jpg (7207 bytes)

The temple walls contains the King's List, the
chronological list of the cartouches of 76 kings and Pharaohs of Egypt. They also contain some of the best-preserved wall panels in all of Egypt, with colors that are still vivid,  such as the panel on the right which depicts Thoth, the Lunar Neter of Sacred Resonance and Writing.

In one of the out-of-the-way halls of the temple, among many thousand year-old columns and wall panels vibrating with color, Andrea will facilitate a Sacred Ceremony to assist you to connect with the energies of Osiris, to receive His blessing for the rebirth of your "New Self" as you move into the shift of the next cycle of the New Dawn here on earth! Open your heart and rejoice as the old patterns that no longer serve you fall away and more Love and Light take their place!

Egypt-Abydos-Osierion.jpg (13819 bytes)Then we have time for a long and thorough visit with our Egyptologist Vivian to the various rooms that are temples to the varous Neters.
One of the highlights of our visit will be to the mysterious Osireion, built with gigantic stones only found in one other place in Egypt - the Valley Temple of the Sphinx. Built with no mortar between these gigantic stones, this powerful building resembles many of the other ancient megalithic sites around the world, such as Sacsayhuan in Peru and Stonehenge in England. Could it be that a civilization more technologically advanced that we are today existed in the world at the same time, many thousands of years ago? The indigenous Wisdom Keepers believe this to be so. On one of the pillars in the temple we will see the ancient symbol of the Flower of Life. We'll explore the meaning of this symbol with, according to Sacred Geometry, is the building block of all life! As well as who painted it on the pillar here. Wisdom Keeper Hakim Awyan's tradtion teaches that it's not as old as the temple itself and was put on the walls much later by followers of Pyrhagoras. Take some time to meditate and focus, and see what psychic archaeology might be revealed to you.

We return to Luxor in the late afternoon and check in at a hotel near the banks of the Nile. You have free time and dinner is on your own this evening.
Overnight Luxor.

Day 8. Sunday,November 7. Luxor: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's Temple; Dendera: Temple of Hathor; Return to Cairo (B)Egypt-Luxor-ValleyKings.jpg (11948 bytes)
Egypt-Anubis-Ani.gif (17434 bytes)After breakfast we visit the West Bank, which includes the Necropolis of Thebes and Hatshepsut's Temple. In the Valley of the Kings we explore the Mysteries of Death & Resurrection as we visit ancient tombs of the pharaohs, vibrant with scenes of ancient daily life and esoteric teachings about the afterlife. You have the option to buy a special ticket to visit the famous tomb of King Tut-Ankh-Amen, whose mummy is in situ.

Egypt-Luxor-HatshepsutTemple.jpg (9616 bytes)The next stop is Queen Hatshepsut's magnificent Temple to Amun at Der el Bahari. The 5th Pharaoh of the18th dynasty, Hatshepsut or Maatkare ("Truth is the Soul of the Sun God") was of one of the most famous of the few handful of the female Pharaohs who ruled Egypt in dynastic times. Her mortuary temple, Djeser Djeseru ("Splendor of Splendors"), is one of the most dramatically situated in the world. We visit the Birth Colonnade, the Anubis Chapel, the Punt Colonnade, the Chapel of Hathor and the Upper Terrace, where the Sanctuary of Hatshepsut and the Sanctuary of Amun are located. Find an out-of-the-way area to sit and meditate for a few minutes to connect with the energies of this remarkable Pharaoh, inviting in the Divine Feminine. Egypt-Dendera-Hathor.jpg (7989 bytes)

Return to the hotel. Check out and enjoy lunch on your own at one of the hotel restaurants.

Then we're off to Dendera, the magnificent temple dedicated to the Neter Hathor, the wife of Horus. Dendera is a Greek transliteration of the Egyptian Enet-t-neter ("Home of the Goddess"). The temple is often referred to today as "the Lourdes of ancient Egypt" because in ancient times it was a healing center and sacred place of initiation into the mysteries of male/female balance and sensual love. Hathor's priestesses and priests offered miraculous cures, practicing all types of magical and psychological therapies.

Egypt-Dendera-CryptHathorSistrum.jpg (9402 bytes)Hathor was also knonw as the Neter of Motherhood, with titles such as "The Great Cow Who Protects Her Child" and "Mistress of the Sanctuary of Women". Her oracular priests and priestesses predicted the fate of the newborn; as well, they were also the midwives who delivered them. As the Protectress of Music and Dance, Hathor was associated with percussive music, in particular the sistrum. Her traditional votive offering was two mirrors, the better with which to see both Her beauty and your own. Her head was used to decorate sistrums and mirrors. She was also the Neter of Joy who was deeply loved by the general population. She was very revered by women, who aspired to embody her multifaceted role as wife, mother, and lover. Her worship was so popular that more festivals were dedicated to her honor than any other Egyptian deity, and more children were named after Her than any other.

Egypt-Dendera-Crypt-LightBulb.jpg (8484 bytes)In the Crypt we'll explore some of the controversial theories about the amazing panels on the walls. Do the light-bulb like objects (Crooke's Tubes) represent an ancient technology of electricity, or some other form of energy known to and utilized by the ancient Khemetians? Or, are they symbols esoteric teachings about spiritual evolution? In ancient times entrance into these underground chambers was limited to only the highest initiates, as the wall panels contain very esoteric information pertaining to alchemy, prehistory, and ancient wisdom.

In one of the upper rooms we'll view the replica of the famous Dendera Zodiac, the only complete working Zodiac that survives from antiquity! (The original one resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris.) The zodiac is referred to by many researchers who have studied it for years as "intentional art", a work of sacred art deliberately encoded with information. It's one of the most well-known sacred calendric artifacts in the world, on the level of Stonehenge and the Aztec calendar. Showing the positions of the stars and planets as they would have been seen at 50BCE, it nevertheless projects its messages forward to 2216 CE!

Here, among the powerful  transformational energies of this sacred site, Andrea will faciliatate your Initiation into the Greater Mysteries of the Divine Feminine. In Her role as the great Goddess of Earthly Love and Healing, Hathor will bestow upon you the energies that will take you  into the higher frequencies of Unconditional Love in your Cosmic Heart.

We return to Luxor and to the airport to check in for our later evening flight to Cairo. Arrive and transfer to our hotel near the Giza Plateau. Dinner on your own.
Overnight Giza.

Day 9. Monday, November 8. Giza: Cairo Museum, Free Time, Awyan Home & Gallery, Farewell Dinner (B/L/D)
Sleep in this morning and rest.  Egypt-Cairo-Museum.jpg (7599 bytes)Later morning we depart to downtown Cairo for a light lunch at a nearby restaurant, before our visit to the world-famous Cairo Museum, where we view the vast collection of artifacts dating back to antiquity, including those from the different periods of ancient Egypt - pre, Old, Middle, & New Kingdoms. One of the highlights of the visit for many people is the visit to the famous and priceless treasures of King Tut-Ankh-Amon. You can see for example, the intricate workmanship and the tiniest details of the contents of the articles packed for this boy Pharaoh to accompany him to the next world. Maybe during your time at the museum you will feel that special energetic pull to a former time and life as you gaze at some of the artifacts.

Later afternoon return to Giza. You have free time to
visit the Awyan home and gallery. PerhapsEgypt-Giza-AwyanGallery.jpg (5809 bytes) you'd like to experience a Khemitian Massage with Miriam Awyan. Or perhaps you've ordered a personalized sculpture from Moses, Yagoob, or Yousef, or a piece of gemstone jewelry from Patricia or Raba. Now's the time to pick them up!

Optional Extension: Sacred Site of Petra, Jordan
November 9 - 12, 2010

Petra-Monastery2.jpg (35714 bytes)

Day 10. Tuesday, November 9. To Petra (B/D)
Morning transfer to the airport for your flight from Cairo to Amman, Jordan. Arrive later morning, where we'll be greeted by our local tour representative and guide. We then depart on our drive to Petra, with a stop for lunch on the way.

Petra, the Greek word for "rock", is the national treasure of Jordan, and has been a World Heritage Site since 1985, has been described by UNESCO as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage." In 2007 it was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Since ancient times it's been known as a city of great religious significance. In the Old Testament there is the tale of the nearby Ain Mousa (Spring of Moses), which is believed to be where Moses struck a rock with his staff to extract water. Also Aaron is said to have died in the Petra area and to have been buried atop Jabal Haroun (Mount Aaron). Later, the Nabateans carved a vast, unique city  into the sheer rock face, packed with tombs, temples, sanctuaries and altars to their gods. They were an industrious Arab people who settled here during the 6th century BCE, or more than 2000 years ago. They turned it into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome. Finally, in its last years, Petra was the home of at least one Byzantine church, which today is still being excavated and contains some extraordinary Byzantine mosaics.

With its giant red mountains and vast mausoleums of a departed race, this ancient wonder has been called "a rose-red city half as old as time" by Dean Burgen in his book Petra.  It's said that "nothing really prepares you for this amazing place. It has to be seen to be believed ". The iron ore in the red rocks produces powerful energies that await us!. We'll open ourselves up to belief through experience as we explore this ancient sacred sites.

Petra-GorgeEntrance.jpg (6194 bytes)We'll enter the city through the Siq ("the shaft"), a narrow gorge flanked on either side by soaring cliffs, formed formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks and serving as a waterway flowing into Wadi Musa ("Valley of Moses"). Just walking through the Siq is an experience in itself, as the colors and formations of the rocks are dazzling! Here, and in the other parts of the site, the color of the rock ranges from pale yellow or white through rich reds to the darker brown of more resistant rocks. The contorted strata of different-coloured rock form whorls and waves of colour in the rock face, which the Nabataeans exploited in their architecture.Petra-Carriage.jpg (8901 bytes)

NOTE: Petra is a vast complex. Motorized vehicles aren't permitted in the site. If you don’t want to walk, you can hire a horse or a horse-drawn carriage to take you through the Siq. It's also possible at the Visitor Center to obtain a special permit (at an extra fee), for the carriage to go inside Petra to visit the main attractions. Once inside the site, you can hire a donkey, or for the more adventurous, a camel - both come with handlers and take designated routes throughout the site. (We'll want to stay together as a group, so we'll make this decision once we're there.)

Petra-Treasury1.jpg (11474 bytes)As we reach the end of the Siq we'll catch our first glimpse of Al-Khazneh, or The Treasure, a truly awe-inspiring experience. The name comes from the local Bedouin belief that the Pharaoh chasing the Israelites hid his treasure in the urn at the top of the Kazneh. A massive façade carved out of the sheer, dusky pink, rock-face, it dwarfs everything around it. Carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of an important Nabataean king, it's a superb example of the engineering genius of these ancient people. Of the 800 carved tombs in Petra, the Kazneh is the most famous. Tomb facades were built from the top down. Scaffolding was built and then grooves were carved into the rock. Into these grooves were inserted pieces of wood, which when made wet, expanded and cracked the rock.

If the gorge and the temple at the end of it look familiar to you, remember the movine Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade!

Petra-Amphitheater.jpg (19508 bytes)A little further from the Treasury, at the foot of the mountain called en-Nejr, is a massive amphitheater, a Roman-style theater which could seat 3,000 people, and whose placement brings the greatest number of tombs within view. The amphitheater has been been cut into the hillside, and into several tombs during its construction. Rectangular gaps in the seating are still visible. Almost enclosing it on three sides are rose-coloured mountain walls, divided into groups by deep fissures, and lined with knobs cut from the rock in the form of towers.

In the later afternoon we leave Petra and check
in at the hotel. Take some free time to relax a bit before our group dinner. Let's share some of our experiences and insights from our visit to this amazing place. Overnight Petra.

Day 11. Wednesday, November 10. Petra (B/D)
Petra-MainStreet.jpg (12042 bytes)
After breakfast we return to the sacred site to explore more of this Wonder of the World - obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars and colonnaded streets. As many as 30,000 people may have lived in Petra during the 1st century CE. A large earthquake in 363 CE destroyed at least half of the city. Petra never recovered from this destruction.

Petra-Monastery1.jpg (11719 bytes)High above, overlooking the valley, is the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery, which is worth the climb up the stairs that take you to it. The Monastery is the largest tomb façade in Petra. Despite its name, it was built as a tomb monument, and may have acquired its name from the crosses inscribed inside. Like the Kazneh, the structure consists of two stories topped by a magnificent urn.  There are various theories about who the designers and builders of the tombs of Petra were. Were they the product of local workers and artisans brought in from Alexandria and Rome? The monuments are Nabatean in style, but they incorporate classical, Egyptian and Mesopotamian elements.
Petra-GreatTemple-MAnderson.jpg (14098 bytes)
Petra-Elephant.jpg (12397 bytes)One of the largest Nabatean complexes at the site is the Great Temple, a two-level structure dating from the 1st century BCE. Discovered in 1992 by Brown University archaeologists, it's still being excavated today. The largest freestanding building uncovered so far in Petra, it rises above the Colonnaded Street, the main street running through the ancient city center. Archaeological evidence indicates the temple was 57 ft tall. The complex is made up of a Lower Temenos, accessed by steep staircases, and an Upper Temenos that contains the major part of the temple. The Lower Temenos, paved with hexagonal stones, was enclosed on the east and west side by huge triple colonnades that contained 96-120 columns. Each of these lead into a small apse, or exedra. Archaeologists believe the West Exedra played an important role in the temple; it was reconstructed several times and was full of artifacts including coins, lamps, ceramics, and most surprisingly of all, a carving of an elephant, unique in Petra!

There are also two excellent museums - the Petra Archaeological Museum and the Petra Nabataean Museum   - both of which house artifacts and relics that have been excavated in the Petra region, and offer insight into Petra's colourful past.

Also, inside the site, several artisans from the town of Wadi Musa and a nearby Bedouin settlement operate small stalls selling local handicrafts, such as pottery and Bedouin jewellery and bottles of striated multi-coloured sands from the area.

Return to the hotel. Dinner with the group, our last time to share together! Overnight Petra.

Day 12. Thursday, November 11. To Cairo (B)
Check out of the hotel later morning. Drive back to Amman. Return flight to Cairo. Arrive and transfer to a hotel near the airport. Check in. Free time. Dinner on your own. Overnight Cairo.

Day 13. Friday, November 12. Depart Egypt (B)
Morning transfer to the airport for your flight from Cairo to the USA. Arrive in the afternoon, same day. Clear Immigration, Baggage Claim, and Customs. You're home. Or, reconnect with flight to your home city if necessary.

A Few Words from The Khemit School of Ancient Mysticism
& Sacred Sites Journeys Sacred Initiatory Journeys to Egypt

EgyptLKramer-Nov-2009.jpg (9517 bytes)I am finally "back". It took me more than a week to become familiar with this new, expanded self.  I woke up every night at 1:30 am to have breakfast (starving!)  I feel very quiet inside and at peace.  I want to thank Andrea for her gentle guidance and wisdom, her beauty as a person and for her commitment to the work.  Of course, I am still integrating and learning from the energies we received in Egypt, but so far as I can describe it, these energies are of an exquisite nature, very refined.  It is amazing that what was created in ancient times is today a calling for the world to transform.  How is this possible in the middle of such noise, dense population, dirt, etc., for these energies to just BE and CREATE change?  I love the mysteries - I love life!  IPeople ask me "what was your favorite part?"  I stop to reflect, and all I can say is "everything!"   Egypt came in a package, and all of it was experiential.  I can't wait to go back. - L. Kramer, MD

What a rejuvenating trip. Instead of coming home tired, I came home super charged with energy. Instead of being "done" after I got back, it lit a fire in me that I hope never goes out. The power of the pyramids is phenomenal. The temple sites speak to you in a language that only the soul can interpret. When a journey like this sparks a beginning rather than an ending, you know you've transcended the sands of time. There are no more barriers. - Joanne D.,MNEgypt-LRenNov-2009.jpg (8023 bytes)

The trip to Egypt exceeded all my expectations. The November weather was perfect with hot sunny days and cool nights. Each site was a gem and worth a longer, repeat visit. The carvings, hieroglyphs and paintings went beyond sheer beauty to offer layer upon layer of meaning. I appreciated the way Andrea and our guides managed our visits so we could get some "private time" in these very special places. I felt like I was both healed by and contributed to the healing of these ancient holy places as we toned and meditated in them. Our Egyptian guides were fantastic, providing insights and inspiring a deeper curiosity. Andrea, Vivian, Yousef, Shahrzad, and Patricia created and held a sacred space where we could all learn. I enjoyed my "Journey Sisters" as much as the journey itself. Everyone brought a special gift for the group. - L. Ren, DC

Egypt-PCaldwell-Nov-2009.jpg (16925 bytes)
I'd love to write an eloquent commentary about my awesome trip to Egypt with Andrea and our group. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to stuff my profound spiritual and emotional experiences into the limited confines of words. I'll simply say that healing and freedom that began there continues to unfold. I am deeply grateful for all my experiences and I am eager for my next journey to Egypt with Andrea!
